Justin and Ashley met on St John in early 2006. Justin’s passion for sailing began during his six years spent on the island in his early twenties. This enthusiasm inspired his professional involvement in the sport in 2007, with his first position as the mate on a local charter vessel. His desire to excel in the sailing industry, and Ashley’s interests in agriculture directed the couple to Newport, Rhode Island to further pursue their career goals.
Ashley accepted a job offer managing an organic farm. She led a work crew and volunteers to produce fruits and vegetables for members of the farm’s Community Supported Agriculture program, and the town’s local farmers’ market. The position gave the couple the farmhouse to live in while Ashley ran and oversaw all farm operations.
Justin was offered a position as a mate, and eventually as a captain, conducting high-end charters and competing in professional regattas. He graduated from New England Maritime Academy, receiving his United States Coast Guard 100-ton license. Over the years, Justin logged over 1,000 nautical miles performing transatlantic deliveries as well as deliveries between the northeastern states in the US and the Caribbean. His sailing experiences range from cruising, to offshore sailing, to modern and classic race programs.
With their hearts still on the island of St John, the couple decided it was finally time to bring their life back to the Caribbean.
Now back on island as a family, Justin, Ashley, and Storm embark on their next chapter with Saint John Yacht Charters. The family feels so fortunate to be a part of the wonderful St John community once again. In all their journeys, they have yet to find the combination of breathtaking beauty and remarkable people found in this part of the world.
Justin recently moved together with his family back to St. John after spending several years off island working in the sailing industry based in Newport, Rhode Island. His sailing experiences range from cruising, to offshore sailing, to modern and classic race programs. Justin has logged many sea miles throughout his years on the ocean and enjoys sharing stories of his travels. Justin has a deep passion and appreciation for the ocean. Always remembering his first sail in St. John as a young child, he takes great joy in watching his own son experience sailing today. Justin believes that a day on the water is an essential part of visiting the islands. While surfing and sailing all over the world, he has developed a wealth of knowledge of its reefs and ecosystems. Justin is delighted to share this knowledge and his experiences with you while new memories are made aboard Survivan.
